How to compare personal growth seminars

The ticket is only part of the price. These are the five things we check for every seminar, and what you should ask before you pay.

  1. 1The full priceTicket, hotel for every event night, travel, food. Ask for upgrades and financing in writing.
  2. 2The refund windowHow long you can cancel for free, and what it costs after that.
  3. 3Selling in the roomWhich programs are offered at the event, and at what price.
  4. 4Length and intensityHours per day, late nights, physical activities like a firewalk.
  5. 5Independent sourcesReporting and reviews beyond the organizer's own page.

More on how we calculate costs is on our methodology page.

Red flags before you pay

None of these means a seminar is bad. Together they tell you how hard you'll be sold to.

  1. A “today only” price for the next program
  2. No refund policy in writing
  3. Financing offered in the room
  4. Pressure to bring friends or family

Questions people ask

How much do personal development seminars cost?

From a few hundred dollars online to several thousand in person. Tony Robbins' Unleash the Power Within starts at $495 online and lists at $1,195–3,995 in person; Date with Destiny comes to about $4,995. At the events we checked, the hotel alone adds about $800–2,000.

Are self-help seminars worth it?

Some are, for some people. They work best when you know what you want from them, set a total budget beforehand and decide in advance not to buy anything in the room. If you mainly want the ideas, books and online versions cost far less.

Can you get a refund for a seminar?

It depends on the terms. UPW refunds until the Day 2 meal break; Date with Destiny refunds in full only within three business days of signing, then charges a $1,995 fee. Read the written refund policy before you pay.

What's the difference between UPW and Date with Destiny?

UPW is Tony Robbins' four-day entry event with public prices and the firewalk. Date with Destiny lasts six days of 12+ hours, goes deeper into beliefs and relationships, and costs several times more.
