Silent retreats: what to expect, what they cost and who should wait

A silent retreat means days without talking, phones, reading or writing, built around sitting and walking meditation. Prices range from free (Vipassana) to about $4,270 for a week at a US meditation center, and most centers keep part of your money if you cancel late.

Key takeaways

  • Silence means more than not talking: centers also ask you to put away your phone, books and notebooks.
  • Cost depends on the tradition: Vipassana courses are free, Christian retreat houses charge about $170 a night, Buddhist centers use sliding scales.
  • Cancelling late is expensive: Spirit Rock, IMS and Gaia House keep the whole fee within two to four weeks of the start.
  • Not for every moment in life: Gaia House and dhamma.org advise against intensive silence during acute depression, anxiety or recent trauma.

Worth it if you…

  • already meditate a little and want to go deeper
  • want a real break from screens and conversation
  • are fine with simple rooms, vegetarian food and a fixed schedule
  • can book dates you're sure about

Skip it for now if you…

  • are in acute depression, anxiety or recent trauma; ask your therapist first
  • expect it to fix a mental health problem
  • need to be reachable by phone every day
  • have never meditated and would start with ten days

What is a silent retreat? Four common types

A silent retreat is a stay of a weekend to several weeks where participants stop talking to each other to focus on meditation or prayer. How strict the silence is, who teaches and what it costs depends on the tradition.

Buddhist insight

Meditation center

Sitting and walking meditation, evening talks, short meetings with teachers. Examples: Spirit Rock (California), Insight Meditation Society (Massachusetts), Gaia House (Devon).
Vipassana

10-day course

The strictest format: about ten hours of meditation a day from a 4 am bell, free of charge. Our Vipassana guide.
Christian

Retreat house

A weekend of prayer, Mass and talks in silence, often in the Jesuit tradition. Example: Sacred Heart Jesuit Retreat House near Denver.
Self-guided

Personal retreat

Your own dates and your own level of silence, with meals provided. Example: Siddhayatan in Texas, two nights minimum.

What happens on a silent retreat?

Most residential retreats follow the same rhythm. You arrive in the afternoon, there's an opening talk in the evening, and silence starts from there. The days alternate sitting and walking meditation, meals eaten in silence, rest and a talk by the teacher in the evening. Spirit Rock describes it as “a quiet rhythm of sitting and walking meditation, Dharma talks, mindful meals, and rest.”

  1. Day 1Arrival and opening talkGaia House registers between 2 and 4.45 pm, serves a light meal at 5.45 pm and opens the retreat at 7.30 pm.
  2. Each dayMeditation, meals, a little workSits and walks through the day. At Gaia House everyone also helps with house work, one to two hours a day.
  3. EveningTeacher's talkA dharma talk, or Mass and adoration at a Christian retreat house.
  4. Last daySpeaking againSilence usually ends near the close, so people can talk before going home.

The Vipassana timetable shows the strict end of the range: wake-up bell at 4 am, meditation from 4.30 am, a discourse at 7 pm and lights out at 9.30 pm. At a self-guided retreat like Siddhayatan, the only fixed points are meals and an evening meditation.

The rules: silence, phones, reading

“Silence” covers more than speech. Gaia House asks retreatants to refrain from “all forms of verbal and written communication”, including reading, writing, calls, texts and email. dhamma.org rules out gestures and written notes too.

Gaia House (UK)Only essentials with teachers and staffSwitched off; no internetNo

Buddhist centers also ask you to follow five precepts, which rule out alcohol and drugs other than prescribed medication. At Vipassana courses men and women are completely separated.

How much do silent retreats cost?

Fees usually include your room, vegetarian meals and the program, but not travel. Buddhist centers use sliding scales: you choose a rate, from a subsidised one to a higher one that supports others. Their fees don't pay the teachers, who rely on donations (dana) offered at the end.

For a week-long silent retreat in California at Spirit Rock, the rate that “covers food, lodging, and program costs” is $2,590 for seven nights; scholarship rates of $50 and $665 exist. The Insight Meditation Society uses four rates and says its middle “Sustaining” rate is the real cost; its 2027 prices are only shown in its booking portal. Kripalu in Massachusetts doesn't list a silent retreat: its self-guided Retreat & Renewal stay, with a silent breakfast, starts at $99 a night plus accommodation.

Deposit, payment and cancelling

This is where silent retreats differ most from a hotel. Most centers keep a fee even if you cancel early, and keep everything close to the date.

Our advice
  • Read the cancellation table before paying; IMS charges the full fee even if you arrive late.
  • Gaia House recommends travel insurance; check whether yours covers a retreat fee.
  • Siddhayatan's terms page and its retreat FAQ give different cancellation rules: ask which applies to you.

Is a silent retreat healthy?

For many people it's restful, but it isn't risk-free. Gaia House writes that if you have experienced “significant trauma or psychiatric illness” in the past year, or are in acute depression or anxiety, “it may not be the best time” for an intensive retreat in silence. dhamma.org says Vipassana “is not a substitute for medical or psychiatric treatment” and doesn't recommend it for people with significant mental health issues.

Research backs the caution. A 2017 PLOS ONE study by Lindahl, Britton and colleagues documented 59 kinds of meditation-related experiences, some very negative. It cites an earlier study in which 63% of people on an intensive Vipassana retreat reported at least one adverse effect, and 7.4% effects bad enough to stop meditating. Cheetah House, a US non-profit, supports meditators in distress.

Before you book
  • If you're seeing a therapist, discuss the retreat with them first; Gaia House may ask for their contact.
  • Answer health questionnaires honestly: they help teachers support you.
  • Tell a teacher early if something feels wrong: speaking with teachers is allowed even during silence.

How to choose a silent retreat as a beginner

Most centers we checked accept beginners: Gaia House says retreats “do not necessarily require any previous experience”, and Spirit Rock calls its week-long example suitable for newcomers. Spirit Rock still recommends two or three daylong programs first if you've never meditated.

What is the best silent retreat in the US?

There's no single best: it depends on your tradition, budget and experience. Compare rules and cancellation terms before you choose.

Can beginners go on a silent retreat?

Yes, at most centers. Gaia House says most retreats need no previous experience and Siddhayatan says the same. Spirit Rock recommends two or three daylong programs first if you've never meditated.

What is a 10-day silent retreat?

Usually a Vipassana course in the S.N. Goenka tradition: free, silent until day 10, with a 4 am wake-up and about ten hours of meditation a day. Including arrival and departure it takes 12 days.
